My Cat Is Not Eating: Dental Causes and Signs

Written and reviewed by the VetTree veterinary team · Last updated July 19, 2026 · reference information

If your cat is eating poorly or wants to eat but cannot, dental or gum pain from tooth resorption, stomatitis, or a fracture may be the cause. In particular, avoiding hard food or chewing on only one side can be a sign of oral pain.

Signs that may point to a dental problem

Common oral causes include tooth resorption, stomatitis, tooth fractures, and advanced periodontitis.

What to check at home

  • Whether your cat eats soft or warmed food; avoiding only hard food can make dental pain more likely
  • Whether bad breath, drooling, or red gums occur
  • Whether your cat drinks water and how its energy and activity have changed

Many causes are unrelated to the mouth, including digestive or systemic illness, so veterinary care is the priority if poor intake continues.

Frequently asked questions

Could a dental problem be why my cat is not eating?

Avoiding only hard food, chewing on one side, or approaching food but stopping after trying to eat can indicate oral pain from tooth resorption, stomatitis, or a fracture. Bad breath or drooling makes an oral cause more likely.

Is it safe for a cat to go several days without eating?

No. Cats can develop liver damage and other serious problems when they go without food. If your cat has eaten almost nothing for more than a day or has low energy, seek veterinary care promptly, regardless of the cause.

What should I check at home?

Check whether your cat can eat soft food, and look for bad breath, drooling, or red gums. Note water intake, energy, and activity. If poor intake continues, veterinary care takes priority.
